Istanbul is one of the most exciting cities in Europe to welcome the new year — but the night needs a little planning. Streets get crowded, restaurants with a view fill up weeks ahead, and late December can be cold and wet. Here is what to know before you decide where to be when the clock strikes twelve.
What New Year's Eve in Istanbul is like
Late December in Istanbul is winter: daytime temperatures are usually around 9–11°C, dropping to about 4–6°C at night, often with rain or wind near the water. The city is busy all evening — especially around Taksim, Istiklal Avenue, Beşiktaş and Ortaköy — and security is visibly high in the central squares. Plan your night around one place rather than trying to cross the city close to midnight.
Your options for the night
Taksim and Istiklal Avenue
Free and full of energy, this is where big crowds gather for the countdown. Expect packed streets, police checkpoints and road closures. It suits travellers who want the street atmosphere — less so families with small children or anyone who dislikes crowds.
Rooftop bars and restaurants with a view
A table overlooking the Bosphorus or the Golden Horn is a classic choice, but most venues sell special New Year menus at higher prices and fill up early. Book as soon as your dates are fixed and check exactly what the price includes.
Hotel gala dinners and club parties
Many large hotels and clubs hold ticketed parties with dinner, music and a countdown. They are comfortable and close to your room, but the view is usually limited to the venue itself.
A New Year's Eve cruise on the Bosphorus
Celebrating on the water puts the dinner, the show and the view in one place — the lit-up bridges and palaces on both shores pass by your table, and there is no need to fight the crowds at midnight.

Why many visitors choose the Bosphorus
Our New Year's Eve dinner cruise boards at Kabataş Pier at 21:00 on December 31 and returns at 02:00. One flat price of €180 per person includes:
- A full Gold Menü dinner — meze, warm snacks, a choice of BBQ platter or fish, fruit and baklava
- Unlimited soft drinks and alcohol all night
- Round-trip hotel pickup and drop-off
- A live show — whirling dervish, folk, Latin and oriental dance, a drum show — then a DJ set
- A champagne countdown on deck at midnight
Because hotel transfer is included, you don't have to hunt for a taxi in the first hours of January 1.

Practical tips for the night
- Book early. New Year's Eve is the busiest night of the year and popular venues and cruises sell out. Aim to reserve in November or early December.
- Dress warm. Smart clothes are fine, but bring a coat — the deck is cold and windy at midnight.
- Plan your way back. Taxis are hard to find after midnight. In recent years the city has kept metro lines running through the night on December 31 — check the official announcements closer to the date.
- Travel light. Carry your phone, a card and a photo of your ID; leave large bags at the hotel.
